Are you new to Netflix? Luckily, there are a lot of great blogs out there with tons of tips. However, it can be difficult to follow some of them if you are starting with nothing, or picking up from where someone else left off. These Netflix tricks can help you get understand what Netflix has to offer and how to make the most of it.
1. Every Title Counts
If you are an avid Netflixer, you might already know that the ratings for movies and TV shows are unique to your account. Netflix takes everything that you have watched — and what your friends have watched — into account. Even if you do not rate it, Netflix knows you watched it, and wants to offer you more like it to watch. That is why you should always, always, rate what you watch. Especially if you hated it. Otherwise, you are not using the Netflix recommendations system to its fullest potential. It also means you should keep an eye on the titles your friends are watching by checking your history, and delete them whenever their tastes do not sync up with yours.
2. Manage Your Viewing History
Speaking of ratings, it is always good to stay on top of your viewing history. There could be a few culprits in there that are completely skewing what Netflix recommends to you. Getting to, and deleting, what you are no longer interested in (or never were) can be a little tricky and time consuming, but the payoff is more than worth it. Sometimes it is easier to just start from scratch. This is one of the Netflix tricks that will give you an entirely new homepage. You will feel like a new person.
3. Take Advantage of FlixTapes
If you are rating what you are watching and Netflix still recommends content that you will never watch, you need to take matters into your own hands. Creating your own FlixTape can be the perfect alternative. The first step is browsing through everything you have added to your list. A lot of them were probably added with the thought, “I’ll watch this one day.” Unfortunately, if it is still in that list, it means “one day” never happened. If you see a theme in your list, create a FlixTape and label it something like “Friday Night Frights.” Then share it with your friends on Reddit, and watch the lists they have created. This is one of the most underused Netflix tricks.
4. Discover More
Once you have gotten through the backlog that you created, you will start to feel a little empty (it happens). Knowing what to watch next is your next step. Again, you can always turn to Reddit for some good selections, but there is still a lot you can be missing. If there is a TV show or movie that you particularly liked, you can view more like it right in Netflix. You can also log on to Twitter or Facebook and use hashtags like “#goodonNetflix” to find new favorites. There are a lot of Netflix tricks that can help you find what to watch next without too much hassle. Just never leave it till the last second or it will end like this…
5. Know Your Resolution
If you have a 4k television, you want to watch Netflix in 4k. There is a growing list of titles that Netflix offers in 4k, but it is still relatively small. However, not all Netflix subscriptions are created equally. You need the top tier, otherwise, you will only be able to stream in 1080p. Plus, you need to have the right settings selected to actually stream that high. There are some pros to streaming at a lower resolution though. Especially if you have slower bandwidth or a low data cap. You might want to stick with SD so you can Netflix longer without buffering. Before changing anything though, you should check what your internet is capable of.
